to your safety"
Car Prowling
- It doesn't have to happen to you.
What
is a Car Prowl?
- Car prowl is theft from a vehicle, such as a camera, purse or
stereo system that is stolen from your vehicle. It can also be
theft of vehicle parts such as tires or batteries.
- When do these crimes occur?
- Most car prowls take place during the hours of darkness, when
you are more likely to be home asleep. They can and do take place
during the day time as well.
- Where is a car prowl most like to take place?
- Wherever there are a lot of vehicles. Typically in residential
neighborhoods, apartment complexes and business parking lots.
Sporting events and large community gatherings are also targets
.
Lock
it Up!
- Keep your windows rolled up and your doors locked whenever you
leave your vehicle. If you have a security system on your vehicle,
make sure it is operating properly.
Park
it Wisely
- If you don't have a garage, park your vehicle in your driveway
or a place where you can keep an eye on it. Park in well lighted
spots so you can see your vehicle.
Operation
ID
- Keep records of the serial numbers of all stereo equipment.
You can also borrow a engraver from Kennewick Police and engrave
your drivers license number on your property. This will help police
identify the owner in the event the property is located.
Use
the Garage
- The safest place for your vehicle is in the garage. If you have
a garage, keep your vehicle parked and locked inside the garage.
Don't forget to close and lock the garage doors.
Clean
it out!
- Remove all loose objects from your vehicle such as clothing,
purses, wallets, computer or cellular phone. These items only
serve to make your vehicle a more attractive target for thieves.
Neighborhood
Watch
- Contact Kennewick Police and learn how to organize a Neighborhood
Watch. Neighborhood Watch groups have significant effect on reducing
burglaries and car prowls in neighborhood.
